Having made my way through all of the recorded scrambles in previous editions of the Lake District scrambles guides, I thought what more? I'm an explorer at heart and could see that there were many more lines to attempt. One thing leads to another whereby you try one route and spy another. I've also incorporated a fair number of easy rock climbs which I was confident enough to attempt without a rope. Of course, one person's easy solo is another's nightmare, but on the whole I've restricted the list to climbs of no more than Difficult in standard with a few above that.
There are many good and interesting routes amongst the loose horror shows, but also lots of loose rock and grass pulling. In the main, don't expect soaring rock buttresses, but rather lines of interest on broken cliffs. Some of them are remote (for the Lake District) and without mobile phone reception so great care is necessary.
In total, I've recorded more than 400 routes, of which 35 are denoted as being suitable for beginners, 46 are graded rock climbs and a further 73 are routes not recorded in the scrambling guides. 3 are gill scrambles which are now out of bounds due to being Sites of Special Scientific Interest. Please respect this and do not attempt them. The majority of the best scrambles are detailed in my scrambling guides, but not all, since some didn't naturally fit into the selected days out. Notable ommissions include the easy but high quality scrambles just above Coniston village, the broken but enjoyable scrambling on Red Stand above Wrynose, and additional serious scrambling on Lingmell's Northern face.
The intention is that this database provides a summary of what is available and gives an indication of what to expect - difficulty, character, quality and location. I've identified where further details can be obtained from the scrambling guides or previous editions of the guides (now out of print). Where a link is provided on the scramble name, photos and a fuller description can be viewed. Further details on other selected scrambles will be added over time. Beyond that, it leaves you free to explore some ill-frequented corners of the Lake District.
